It’s amusing that these beauties are often exported to the U.K. Where they are used as fishing bait. They are revered in Japan as a delicious entry into autumn and have many festivals celebrating the start of the season such as this one in Tokyo I visited.http://www.gotokyo.org/en/kanko/meguro/event/meguro_sunma.html
Thousands visited the Meguro sanma matsuri with eager folks waiting in line for hours to sample the fish fresh off the grill. I was perplexed as to the motivation behind this fervent enthusiasm but it all seemed to make perfect sense when I was in the sea of ecstatic revellers.
Usually enjoyed with grated daikon and sudachi, they also love a quick grilling brushed with roasted garlic ponzu.
Also known as mackerel pike, they are high in omega 3 ‘s and are abundant so they can be eaten with a clear conscience.
